Sandstone can be porous making it more prone to staining. To protect against staining it is desirable to use a high quality penetrating breathable sealer. It is advisable to apply the sealer prior to installation which will also assist in minimizing staining during installation.
When sandstone floor tiles have been laid and grouted it is important to remove all grout and cement residues immediately. The best method of cleaning the tiles is with warm water and a small amount of a neutral cleaner. There are a multitude of coatings, sealers, cleaners available both solvent based and water based emulsions.
PENETRATING SEALERS
These types of sealers deeply impregnate the pores and generally leave the stone/tile unchanged in appearance. The resin lines the pores of the substrate and creates a multi-dimensional network which repels the water and/or oil (depending on the resin), Because the pore is lined, not filled, it allows water vapour to escape (allowing the stone/tile to breathe), while providing protection from surface staining.
COATINGS
Coatings include both solvent based solutions and water based emulsions. These products soak into the pores and build into the surface – acting as a physical barrier to prevent water, oil, and dirt from entering the pores. Coatings will give a glazed appearance on the surface and should only be used on relatively porous surfaces such as Sandstone.
CLEANERS / SOLVENTS
Cleaning prior to sealing and ongoing maintenance is vitally important to get the maximum performance from the sealers. Our cleaners are designed for stone and tile surfaces and also for cleaning sealed surfaces. |
